Heavy Board Game
A heavy board game is a more complex, strategy-first game designed for players who enjoy a big mental puzzle.
It typically has many rules, multiple systems that interact (economy, engine-building, map control, tech trees, etc.), and lots of meaningful decisions with long-term consequences.
Heavy games usually take longer to teach (20–45+ minutes) and longer to play (often 2–4+ hours), and they reward repeated plays because you keep discovering better strategies. They’re ideal for dedicated game groups who like planning ahead, optimizing, and really digging into a game—less ideal for casual nights or brand-new players.
